Dounreay has long had a problem with particles of spent nuclear fuel, predominantly composed of Cs-137 released during reprocessing, escaping through effluent and landing on local beaches. The Groundhog vehicle used to detect and extract these particles from 700,000 square meters of beach has recently received an upgrade. Similar radiation monitoring technologies are used worldwide at high-risk sites to confirm their continued safe operation.
